THE IMPRESSIONS: SAM GOODEN, FRED CASH, and REGGIE TORIAN, SR.
The trio of singers poses for a photograph in this signed b/w 11x8½ image
Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: “Blessings to you / Sam Gooden”, “Best wishes / Fred Cash”, and “Blessings / Reggie T”. On an 11x8½ printed photograph with a printed banner across the bottom with the group's name and phone number. All three men look great in matching ties and jackets. The Impressions initially formed in 1958, but didn't achieve stardom until 1961, when the group's lineup consisted of a quintet (for a time) and they released the single “Gypsy Woman”. Once the group was distilled into a trio with Sam Gooden, Fred Cash, and Curtis Mayfield, they found their groove; Mayfield wrote gospel-influenced, socially conscious soul songs like “Keep on Pushing” (1964), “People Get Ready” (1965), and “Choice of Colors” (1969), all top pop and soul hits throughout the 1960s. Mayfield left the group in 1970 to start a solo career, and while he continued to write songs for the Impressions they failed to achieve the same level of success. The group continues to perform to this day. Sam Gooden (b. 1934) is the only singer who has remained with the group since its inception in 1958 to the present day. He goes back-and-forth with lead singer Mayfield in a number of hit tunes, including “It's All Right”. Fred Cash (b. 1940 in Chattanooga, Tennessee) joined the soul group in 1962. Cash has known Gooden since they were children singing in the same gospel choir. Reggie Torian Sr. (ca. 1951) is a soul singer who first joined the Impressions in 1973 as their lead singer. After Curtis Mayfield left the group in 1970, the Impressions hired numerous singers to take Mayfield's place, but Torian eventually settled into the role and never looked back. He grew up listening to the Impressions, searing the group's songs into his head so he knew them by memory even as a teenager. Today, he continues to perform with the Impressions and on his own, delivering the Impressions' special brand of soul and socially-conscious music to the next generation. Fine condition.
