THE INK SPOTS: BILL KENNY, BILLY "BUTTERBALL" BOWEN, BERNIE MACKEY
B/w Bruno of Hollywood publicity photo of the Ink Spots, signed by Billy "Butterball" Bowen, Bernie Mackey and longtime member Bill Kenny
Inscribed photo signed "To 'Rupe' from 'Bill' Kenny and the boys", "Butterball" and "Mac" with one unidentified signature. B/w, 7¾x9¾ overall, 7¼x8¾ image, one surface. Photo by Bruno of Hollywood and the Gale Agency, Inc. of New York City. Captioned: "The Ink Spots". BILL KENNY (1914-1978, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) replaced Jerry Daniels as lead tenor. He stayed with the band until its breakup in the 1960s. BILLY "BUTTERBALL" BOWEN (1909-1982, born in Birmingham, Alabama) was with the Ink Spots from 1944 to 1951. BERNIE MACKEY (1909-1980) replaced Charlie Fuqua in 1943 and was with the band until 1945. THE INK SPOTS were originally formed in 1931 and performed until 1964, and they greatly influenced later generations of black male musical groups and the doo-wop genre. Their hits include If I Didn't Care, I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire and Don't Get Around Much Anymore. None of the original Ink Spots survive. However, Jim Nabbie, a group member from 1945 until his death in 1992, trademarked the Ink Spot name in the 1950s to fend off imitators and selected all current members except newcomer Dow. The group continues to perform and remains faithful to the close harmonies that generated three decades of hits. Lightly toned, cracked, creased, rippled and bowed. Signatures have light contrast, but are legible. Light impression and scratches on image touches Kenny's signature. Light tears in right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
