THE KINGSMEN. Signatures: "Lynn Easton", "J. C. Reick", "Best/Wishes/Mike", "Dick/Peterson" and "Kerry", 4x5. Kerry has written "Kingsmen" at upper left margin. Signatures of Kingsmen after the breakup of the original Portland, Oregon "garage band" in 1964. The lineup of the original Kingsmen, formed in 1959, included Jack Ely (lead singer, guitar), LYNN EASTON (drums), MIKE MITCHELL (lead guitar), Bob Nordby (bass) and Don Gallucci (piano). The band recorded its only hit, "Louie Louie", for less than $50 at a local recording studio, sending it as an audition tape to a cruise line, which hated it, although "Louie Louie" received extensive local air play. When the song broke nationally in 1964, Easton announced he had copyrighted the group's name and was now its sole owner and new lead singer. Ely responded by forming his own Kingsmen and touring at the same time as Easton, who was lip-synching "Louie Louie", which had been originally sung by Ely. Easton and Mitchell were the only original members of the Kingsmen, who scored two more hits with "Money" and "Little Latin Lupe Lu", and they and their replacement band members toured as the "original Kingsmen", although Ely headlined the 30th Anniversary Louie Louie Tour. DICK PETERSON joined the band in 1963 and has remained with it ever since. J.C. REICK and KERRY MAGNESS were members of the group for only a year, 1966-1967, which provides a good approximate date for these signatures.Ink smudged at the "s" and "n" of Kingmen and the "B" and "W" of Mike's writing. Overall, fine condition.
