The Seattle Supersonics, under head coach BERNIE BICKERSTAFF, finished the year at 41-41. The Utah Jazz, under head coach JERRY SLOAN, went 55-27, losing to the Portland Trail Blazers in the first playoff round. The Los Angeles Lakers, under head coach PAT RILEY, notched a record of 63-19, advancing to the Western Conference Semi-finals, where they were vanquished by the Phoenix Suns. Many talented players are represented here. Three signers are represented in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame forward RICK BARRY (b. 1944) is the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and ABA in scoring. His name appears near the top of every all-time offensive list. He scored more than 25,000 points in his professional career and in four different seasons averaged more than 30 points. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, four All-NBA First Teams, and five All-ABA First Teams. After his career ended, Barry became a broadcaster. After several seasons at the mic, he drifted out of the public spotlight in the mid-1980s. In the early 1990s Barry resurfaced as a minor league coach. He began in the Global Basketball Association, then moved on to the CBA's Fort Wayne Fury. In 1996, he was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. KC JONES (1932-2020) was a teammate of Bill Russell on the University of San Francisco's back-to-back NCAA champions (1955-1956), on the 1956 gold-medal US Olympic team, and on the Boston Celtics teams which won 8 consecutive NBA titles (1959-1966). Returning to the Celtics as head coach, Jones lead the team to Atlantic Division leadership in all five of his seasons there, and to NBA Championships in 1984 and 1986. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1989. In 1990, he would replace Bickerstaff as head coach of the Supersonics. PAT RILEY (b. 1945) led the University of Kentucky to the NCAA title game in 1966 as a player and was part of the championship 1971-1972 Los Angeles Lakers under Bill Sharman (he played most of his nine pro ball years with the Lakers). But Riley was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 not as a player, but as a coach. He returned to Los Angeles in 1981 and coached the Lakers to four NBA Championships (1981-1982, 1984-1985, 1986-1987 and 1987-1988) and three West Conference Championships. After a less-than-successful run with the Knicks (1991-1995), who saw only one East Coast championship during his stay there, Riley moved to Miami (1995-2008) and led the Heat to an NBA Championship in the 2005-2006 season. He was named the NBA Coach of the Year for 1990, 1993 and 1997. In all, Riley has a 1,210-694 record as a coach. Lightly worn. Lightly creased. Lightly toned. Lightly frayed at left edges.
