Photograph signed: "7/1/10 Robert/Vaughn" and "David McCallum", in various inks, color,
8x10. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ran on NBC from 1964-1968. ROBERT VAUGHN
played Napoleon Solo and DAVID McCALLUM was Illya Kuryakin. Inspired by the
James Bond stories, the series, with permission from Bond's creator, Ian Fleming, used the
name of a Bond character as a main TV character. "Napoleon Solo" was an underworld
chieftain who had been killed off in Goldfinger, but in the TV series he was a secret agent
who, with his partner Illya Kuryakin, battled the evil forces of THRUSH. U.N.C.L.E. was
the United Network Command for Law Enforcement, an international crime-fighting
organization. Scottish-born actor David McCallum (1933-2023) was in such films as Billy
Budd (1962), The Great Escape (1963) and The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), and he
appeared in made-for-TV movies and series. McCallum, who guest starred on a long list of
TV shows, has recently been seen on The Education of Max Bickford and had recurring roles
on JAG and Navy NCIS. He was married to actress Jill Ireland from 1957-1967. Robert
Vaughn received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for The Young Philadelphians
(1959) and was one of The Magnificent Seven the following year. However, his most famous
screen role was that of Napoleon Solo in the TV spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
(1964-1968). In subsequent years, Vaughn was often cast as a bad guy in films such as Bullitt
(1968), Brass Target (1978) and Superman III (1982). Fine condition.
