NEW YORK YANKESS (1979)
Sixteen Yankees signed this baseball, including Hall of Fame enshrinees Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter.
Official Lee Mac Phail American League Baseball signed: "Yogi Berra", "Reggie Jackson", "Jim 'Catfish' Hunter", "Willie Randolph", "Bucky Dent", "Jim Spencer", "Ron Davis", "Fred Stanley", "Jay Johnstone", "Chris Chambliss", "Tommy John", "Ed Figueroa", "Ken Clay", "Don Gullett", and "Juan Beniquez". There is one unidentified signer on the ball, making a total of 16. Someone has written "79 New York Yankees" on the sweet-spot. The Yankees finished 89-71 in 1979, 13 games behind the Baltimore Orioles, in a season plagued by injuries, off-field controversies, and the tragic death of catcher Thurman Munson. However, all but two of these signers were on one or more of the fine Yankee teams which had won the American League pennant in 1976 and back to back World Series (1977-1978). One who wasn't, Tommy JOHN, was in those same two Series, pitching for the opposing Los Angeles Dodgers! All signers were players except BERRA, the former Yankee Hall of Fame player and manager who was a coach during this period. Faint stains and scuff marks touch several signatures but do not obscure any.
