On October 8, 1956, the New York Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0 in Game 5 of the World Series making them the World Champions for that year. Series history was made by DON LARSEN of the Yankees, who pitched a perfect game, the only one ever pitched in the World Series. He required only 97 pitches. He is shown in this photo delivering the last pitch. The last batter Larsen faced was DALE MITCHELL, who was declared out by umpire Babe Pinelli on a called third strike. Mitchell and others, including Mickey Mantle in centerfield, thought the ball a bit outside, but mayhem had erupted and catcher Yogi Berra had jumped into Larsen's arms before Mitchell could argue. Presented on a Pedestal.
