THE O'NEILL PLAYS PLAY CAST
Signed by six performers from the play on the cover
Show Bill signed: "Jason Robards", "Colleen Dewhurst", "Jane Macfie", "William Cain", "George Hearn", "Elizabeth/Wilson", 70 pages, 5½x8½. Playbill for a production of The O'Neill Plays at New York's Neil Simon Theatre (1988), signed on the front cover. This production included repertoire performances of Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness and Long Days Journey Into Night. A decorated navy veteran of World War II, JASON ROBARDS (1922-2000) moved on to success on the Broadway stage. Among his best early film roles were encores of his earlier stage roles (Long Days Journey Into Night, 1962; A Thousand Clowns (1965). He earned two Oscars as Best Supporting Actor (All The President's Men, 1976; Julia, 1977), and was nominated for another (Melvin and Howard, 1980). The son of stage and screen actor Jason Robards, Sr., he appeared on Broadway with his dad in The Disenchanted (1958). On Broadway from 1955, COLLEEN DEWHURST (1924-1991) became one of America's foremost interpreters of such pantheon playwrights as Eugene O'Neill and Edward Albee; she won a 1981 Tony Award for her performance in the revival of O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten. The forceful, deep-throated Dewhurst was not always easy to cast in films, but she chalked up several memorable movie portrayals, not least of which was as Diane Keaton's WASP-ish mom in Annie Hall (1977). Her TV work included the delightful "middle aged pregnancy" comedy And Baby Makes Six (1979) and numerous appearances as Candice Bergen's mom on Murphy Brown. GEORGE HEARN (b. 1934) won Tony award for La Cage aux Folles (1984) and Sunset Boulevard (1995). He was nominated in three more roles: Watch on the Rhine (1980), A Doll's Life (1983) and Putting it Together (2000). A frequent TV guest star, he may also be heard on recordings of many Broadway musicals and show tune collections. ELIZABETH WILSON (1921-2015) won a Tony Award for her performance in Sticks and Bones (1972) as well as an Emmy nomination for her performance in Nutcracker: Money, Madness and Murder (1987). Wilson studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse before making her Broadway debut in the 1953 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Picnic. She reprised her role as Christine Schoenwalder in the 1955 film adaptation, her first credited film role. She's appeared in a total of 18 Broadway performances between 1953 and 2000, including the original production of The Desk Set (1955-1956), and in a total of almost 70 movies and TV shows between 1946 and 2001, including starring roles in Rod Serling's Patterns (1956), The Graduate (1967), The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1974), The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981) and The Addams Family (1991) and a recurring role as Frieda Hechlinger in East Side/West Side (1963-1964), Annie Bogert in Doc (1975-1976) Kathy Kelly in Morningstar/Eveningstar (1986) and Rosalind Dupree in Delta (1993). WILLIAM CAIN (b. 1931) appeared in 13 Broadway plays between 1970 (Wilson in the Promised Land) and 2004 (King Lear). His film appearance range from The Betsy (1978) to The Ice Storm (1997). JANE MACFIE was making her only Broadway appearance to date in this pair of plays, she has been seen on TV from Frasier (1996) to Wedding Band (2012). Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
