PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES : RICHIE ASHBURN, LARRY BOWA and others. Baseball signed: "Rich Ashburn" [in sweet spot], "Larry Bowa", "Oscar Gamble", "Don Money", "Terry Harmon", "Byron Browne", "Darrell Brandon" and one unidentified signature. 8 signatures in all. Spalding Official National League Ball, Charles S. Feeney, President. At least six signers were members of the Phillies of 1971, not a memorable year for the team with a 67-95 finish, last place in the NL East. Richie ASHBURN (1927-1997), a fleet centerfielder for the Phillies from 1948 to 1961, made 5 All-Star teams and led the National League in hitting twice. His long overdue enshrinement in the Hall of Fame came in 1995. After his playing career, he broadcast Phillies game for 35 years. Larry BOWA played his best Major League seasons with the Phillies (1970-1981). A 4-time All-Star and 2-time Gold Glove, Bowa leads all shortstops in single season (.991) and career (.980) fielding averages. The fiery Bowa managed the Phillies from 2000 to 2004. Oscar GAMBLE got the last hit in Philadelphia's Connie Mack Stadium, formerly Shibe Park, in 1970. After three years with the Phillies, he moved to the American League, where he had his best hitting seasons. Don MONEY, a shortstop with the 1969 Phils, was bumped to third base by Larry Bowa, then traded to the Milwaukee Brewers after the 1972 season to make room for Mike Schmidt. Terry HARMON set a still unbroken record with the 1971 Phillies, 18 chances in a game by a second baseman. Byron BROWNE, a fine defensive outfielder who struck out a lot, spent his last three ML seasons in Philadelphia. Darrel BRANDON came back from arm problems to spend three useful years in the Phillies bullpen (1971-1973). Lightly soiled. Brandon has signed with two pens. Eighth (unidentified) signature is very faint. Otherwise, fine condition.
