THE PICKENS SISTERS: JANE PICKENS
Vintage photo, shown with neck scarf and woolen jacket
Photograph inscribed and signed: "For Beni,/with every good/wish/Jane Pickens". B/w, 7x9¼. The Pickens Sisters, brought up in Georgia, moved to New York, where they became a nationally popular vocal trio with their own radio show (1932-1936). Billed initially as "the Three Little Maids from Dixie," they had a varied repertoire which ranged from gospel to Broadway. They appeared together on Broadway in Thumbs Up, and in the film Sitting Pretty. A fourth sister, Grace, was the group's business manager. Jane Pickens (Hoving), 1908-1972, the most musically talented sister, was the group's arranger, and the only one to continue a music career after marriage. She appeared on stage in The Ziegfeld Follies of 1936, and in other shows. She ran for Congress in 1972. Heavily toned and soiled. Surface damage. Filing holes at left edge. Edges frayed and irregularly cut. Corners creased and worn. Mounting residue and unknown stains on verso. Signature light and beaded but legible.
