THE PICKENS SISTERS (JANE PICKENS)
The famous singer is shown reclined on a sofa and wearing an elegant blouse, in this black and white photograph
Inscribed Photograph Signed: “To George Heischmann/all best wishes/Jane Pickens” in blue ink. 8¼x10. B/w. Jane Pickens (1912-1992) was a popular musical singer on Broadway and radio, possessing a powerful mezzo-soprano voice. She began her singing career as the leader of the Pickens Sisters, a group composed of her and her sisters that was direct competition for the Boswell sisters. When the group disbanded after two sisters married, Pickens continued to pursue music, and would often take back up formal training to refine her skills. One of her biggest roles was in the opera Regina, though it was certainly not her only credit. She also sang in the Ziegfeld Follies, appearing in the same cast as Fanny Brice and Gypsy Rose Lee. Her career slowed later in life, but she still continued her passion for music, performing at charity events and fund-raising affairs, with the Salvation Army being a particular favorite of hers. Margins slightly creased, soiled and worn. Lightly wrinkled and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
