THE PLATTERS: ZOLA MAE TAYLOR. Stock Certificate endorsed: "Zola Taylor" on verso (hinged to show both sides), 1p, 9¼x6½. California, 1956 February 29. Certificate No. 2 certifying "that Zola Mae Taylor is the registered holder of Two Hundred, Twenty-five shares, being the shares represented hereby, of The Five Platters, Inc." Part of a capitalization of $5,000. 5,000 shares; each share was one dollar. On verso, Taylor has assigned 45 of her shares to Platter's tenor David Lynch. Also signed: "Buck Ram" as President and "Bennett J. Cravitz" as Secretary. Founder and manager BUCK RAM incorporated The Five Platters in early 1956. BENNETT J. CRAVITZ was the corporation's attorney as well as secretary. The original Platters, which had originally been formed in 1953, consisted of four male singers: Tony Williams (lead), David Lynch (tenor), Herb Reed (bass) and Alex Hodge. ZOLA MAE TAYLOR, who died in 2007, became the group's female vocalist in 1954, the year before Paul Robi replaced Hodge. The five proved to have "The Magic Touch" from 1955 through 1960. The group, considered one of the most romantic of the "doo wop" groups of the 1950s and 1960s, were the first Black act of the era to top the pop charts. The Platters recorded hit after ht, including "Only You", "My Prayer", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", Twilight Time", Harbor Lights" and "The Great Pretender". In 1960, Williams left for a solo career and became involved in litigation with Ram in the 1970s over the use of the group name; Ram won based largely upon the foresight he showed in creating the corporation. Taylor left the group by 1966 and was replaced by Sandra Dawn, but the golden years of the Platters remain those with Taylor's vocals. Today, there are an estimated 125 sanctioned versions of "the original Platters" on the oldies show circuit. Lightly creased, mid-vertical fold, not at signatures. Pinholes at upper, lower and left margins. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 30x18¼.
