THE PRO ARTE QUARTET: GERMAIN PRÉVOST, ANTONIO BROSA, VICTOR GOTTLIEB and LAURENT HALLEUX. Program signed: "Antonio Brosa", "L Halleux", "Victor Gottlieb" and "G Prévost" [in bar of music] in pencil, 1p, 3x6. Freeport, 1942 February 7. Program for an appearance of the Pro Arte Quartet sponsored by the Freeport Woman's Club. Also signed: "Leon Pensian/Mgr." GERMAIN PRÉVOST, who played the viola, had co-founded the Pro Arte Quartet with violinist Alphonse Onnou in 1912. The Quartet, which became the Court Quartet of Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, embarked on its first world tour in 1919. The group debuted in New York in 1926, beginning the first of 30 tours of American cities. In 1940, the outbreak of WWII stranded the Quartet in the U.S., where they accepted a residency at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the first such residency at a major American university. Over its long history, the a number of distinguished musicians have lent their talents to the Quartet. Spanish violinist ANTONIO BROSA (1894-1979), the first violinist for the group at this time, had previously headed his own string quartet, the Brosa String Quartet, circa 1931, 1935. Second violinist LAURENT HALLEUX can be heard on a number of classical recordings. Cellist VICTOR GOTTLIEB can be heard on recordings ranging from classical music to a Henry Mancini compilation. Slightly soiled. Tape stain at upper right blank margin touches the "a" of Brosa, light stain at the "Pe" of Pensian's signature. Overall, fine condition.
