AL RITZ (of THE RITZ BROTHERS)
Signed 4½x7½ photo, shown with a surprised grin on his face
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/Al Ritz". B/w, 4½x7½ (one surface). Al Ritz, born Al Joachim (1901-1965) was the first in the family to go into show business, as a stage dancer and movie extra. Brothers Jimmy and Harry soon followed, managed by a fourth brother, George, and after a brief stint as "the Collegians," began performing comedy routines as The Ritz Brothers. The team was known for comedy dance routines, tongue-twisting banter, and wide-eyed expressions. Starting out in Broadway reviews, the brothers made their Hollywood debut in Hotel Anchovy, in 1934. Their other movie vehicles included Sing, Baby Sing (1936), Life Begins in College (1937), The Three Musketeers (1939) and Never a Dull Moment (1943). The brothers remained popular thereafter in live performances and TV guest appearances. Al died two decades before his brothers, victim of a heart attack. Mel Brooks called the Ritz Brothers his idols. Signature lightly beaded but legible. Corners lightly chipping. Ink stamp and pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
