The Roots, which is also known as The Legend/The Legendary, The Fifth Dynasty and The Foundation, is a Grammy Award-winning hip hop group based in Philadelphia. Black Thought (MC vocals) was an original member of the group, which was formed in 1987. Known for its innovative lyrics and live instrumentation, The Roots has found critical acclaim and influenced later hip-hop and R&B artists. The versatile Black Thought (born Tariq Trotter) himself has influenced rappers such as Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap and Nas. The Roots, which won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo of Group for "You Got Me" (which also featured Erykah Badu), has also been nominated for Grammys for Best Rap Album (Phrenology, 2002), Best Urban/Alternative Performance for "Star" (2004) and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Don't Say Nuthin'" (2004), and the group was named one of the "twenty greatest live acts in the world" by "Rolling Stone" magazine in 2003. In addition to Black Thought, current members of the group include ?uestlove (Ahmir Thompson, drums), Hub (Leonard Nelson Hubbard, bass guitar), Kamal (keyboards), Knuckles (percussion) and Captain Kirk (Kirk Douglas, guitar).
