Photograph signed: "Always/Ida Lupino" and "E G Robinson". B/w, 8x10. Movie still from the 1941 film, ©Vitagraph, Inc. Humphrey van Weyden (Alexander Knox), a writer, and fugitives Ruth Webster (Ida Lupino) and George Leach (John Garfield) have been given refuge aboard the sealer "Ghost," captained by the cruel Wolf Larsen (Edward G. Robinson). The crew mutinies against Larsen's many crimes, but find themselves drawn inexorably back to him as the "Ghost" sails toward disaster. The film was nominated for a 1942 Oscar for Best Special Effects. A supporting actress in the 1930s, LUPINO (1918-1995) got her first starring role opposite Humphrey Bogart in High Sierra (1941). Beginning with Not Wanted (1949), she began directing films, the only woman doing so at the time. She also directed many TV episodes, including programs like Twilight Zone. ROBINSON (1893-1973) had his first film success in Little Caesar (1931), leading to a series of gangster roles. Later film successes included Double Indemnity (1944), Key Largo (1948), The Cincinnati Kid (1948) and Soylent Green (1973). He learned shortly before his death that he would be awarded an Oscar in 1973 for his outstanding contribution to motion pictures. Creased and worn. Pencil notes on verso (unknown hand, no show through).
