THE STAPLE SINGERS
Photograph signed by all four members of the R&B group, framed with their 1973 #1 single, "If You're Ready (Come With Me)" to an overall size of 17½x27½.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Pop Staples", "Your Pal/Pervis/Staples", "To Andy,/Best Wishes/Mavis/Staples" and "To Dear Sweet Andy,/Best of Everything/Cleotha Staples". B/w, 8x10. Printed caption in lower margin. Framed with their 45 rpm single on the Stax label, "If You're Ready (Come With Me)" to an overall size of 17½x27½. In 1948 ROEBUCK "POP" STAPLES formed his children into what was originally a folk and gospel ensemble performing in the Chicago area. His children were CLEOTHA (b. 1934), PERVIS (b. 1935) and MAVIS (b. 1939), as well as Yvonne (b. 1936), who did not remain with the group. As the Staple (not Staples) Singers, they signed their first professional contract in 1952, but only hit the big time after signing with Stax records in 1968. They rolled off a string of R&B hits in the 1970s, with strong crossover appeal on the pop charts. "Respect Yourself" (1968), with its timely message of self-empowerment, came in at #2 in 1971, followed by #1 hits "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again." "If You're Ready (Come With Me) was #1 on the R&B charts in 1973, and the #9 pop hit. The Staple Singers can be heard singing "The Weight" with The Band on Martin Scorsese's 1976 concert film, The Last Waltz. The Staple Singers were enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, shortly before Pop's death, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2005. Creased and lightly toned at edges. Multiple pin-sized holes at edges. Signatures in fine condition. Not framed in the Gallery of History style.
