Van, John, Patsy and Jimmy are pictured. Donna has signed, but is not in the picture; one other family member is pictured but has not signed. Ernest Van "Pop" Stoneman (1893-1968), a bluegrass musician from Iron Ridge, Virginia, recorded over 200 songs between 1924 and 1929, including the 1924 hit, "The Sinking of the Titanic." On many recordings and live performances, he was accompanied by his wife, fiddler Hattie Frost Stoneman. According to biographer Ivan Tribe, the Stonemans had 25 children, most of whom became musicians. Soon there were several groups of family members performing at various places as The Stonemans. The Great Depression brought bankruptcy for "Pop" Stoneman and an interruption of the music, as those who were able found other jobs. In 1947, however, the family - by now living in Maryland - was rediscovered in a talent contest at Constitution Hall. TV, radio and recording contracts followed. By the 1960s, The Stonemans were cutting albums for MCA and hosted a syndicated TV show. They were named the Country Music Associations Vocal Group of the Year in 1967. Over 30 Stonemans albums are still in print. Fine condition.
