THE TURTLES
Sheet music for their hit single "Happy Together" signed by Howard Kaylan, Mark Vokman, Jim Pons, and a rare signature from original rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker
Sheet music signed: "Mark Volman", "Jim Tucker", "Jim Pons", "Howard Kaylan", 8½x11. Sheet music for the song "Happy Together", released 1967. HOWARD KAYLAN and MARK VOLMAN, both born in 1947, formed the core of a surf band which transformed into a folk rock band and peaked as a pop/roc band in the late 1960s. Kaylan was lead vocalist, Volman a guitarist, saxophonist and accompanying vocalist in a band with an otherwise shifting membership. The group's first big hit was a cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" (1965). Its biggest hit and signature song, "Happy Together", topped the charts in 1967. Other hits, including "She'd Rather Be with Me" followed shortly. The Turtles sang the title song for the 1967 film comedy, A Guide for the Married Man. The band's original recording company, White Whale, foundered, and for more than a decade the group lost the right not only to call itself The Turtles, but even to use the names Kaylan and Volman. This didn't stop them. Calling themselves Flo & Eddie, Volman and Kaylan recorded with Frank Zappa, and backed Bruce Springsteen on "Hungry Heart." Since regaining their identity as The Turtles in 1983, the group has toured with some success. The film Happy Together (2009), starring Patrick Dempsey and Helen Slater, uses the Turtles recording as its theme. JIM PONS (b. 1943) played bass guitar with The Turtles, The Leaves and The Mothers of Invention. He later worked as a video director for the NFL's New York Jets. JIM TUCKER (b. 1946) was the original rhythm guitarist for the band but left in 1967 following an insult directed at him by John Lennon, never returning to the music business again after his departure.
