Editorial cartoon of the Burger Court from an unidentified newspaper. Each member is named with captions. This cartoon reflects the U.S. Supreme Court from 1972 to 1975. Lightly toned. Blue ink and lead pencil notations with blue ink marks on verso, all in unknown hands. 4¾x8. August 29, 1972. Printed Supreme Court routing slip. According to this slip, Justices Byron White, Thurgood Marshall, and Harry A. Blackmun declined to sign this cartoon. Lightly toned, soiled, and creased. Light discoloration, which touches notations. Light impressions at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition. 2) Typed note unsigned. 5x2¾. In full: "Fay The CJ [Chief Justice Warren E Burger] is no longer signing this sort of thing. mb". Lightly toned, discolored, and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition. 3) Envelope unsigned. Black ink stamps. 9x6. Addressed to Bill Hagach in Irvington, New York. One 8¢ Dwight Eisenhower stamp affixed. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly creased. ¾x1 cut in right edge. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition. Burger (1907-1995), appointed by Nixon, served as chief justice from 1969 to 1986. WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS (1898-1980), appointed by FDR, was an associate justice for 36 years (1939-1975), the longest term in U.S. history thus far. WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, JR. (1906-1997), appointed by Eisenhower, was an associate justice from 1956 to 1990. POTTER STEWART (1915-1985), also appointed by Eisenhower, was an associate justice from 1958 to 1981. LEWIS F. POWELL, JR. (1907-1998), also appointed by Nixon, was an associate justice from 1972 to 1987. WILLIAM H. REHNQUIST (1924-2005), another Nixon appointee, was an associate justice from 1972 to 1986, when he succeeded Burger, who had retired, as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Four items.
