This 1908 letter, on New York State Executive Chamber stationery, is signed by
Governor and future Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Charles Evans Hughes. It's also
signed by Chief Justice Warren Burger and all eight members of his 1970-1971 Supreme
Court. Documents signed by two chief justices and an entire Supreme Court are extremely
rare.
Typed letter signed: "Charles Evans Hughes" in closing and "Hugo L. Black", "W O Douglas","Potter Stewart", "Wm J Brennan Jr", "Byron R. White", "J Marshall Harlan","Warren E.
Burger", "Thurgood Marshall" and "Harry A. Blackmun" along right edge in various inks, 1p,
7¾x10½, on New York State Executive Chamber stationery. No place, 1908 March 11.
Addressed to Mr. Manning P. Brown, Passaic, N.J. In full: "Dear Sir: In accordance with your
request I take pleasure in sending you my autograph./ Very truly yours". This letter is signed by
two Chief Justices of the Supreme Court: CHARLES EVANS HUGHES (1930-1941) and
WARREN E. BURGER (1969-1986). Evans was Governor of New York from 1907 to
1910, hence the New York Executive Chamber stationery. It's also signed by all eight
members of Burger's 1970-1971 court: HUGO L. BLACK, HARRY A. BLACKMUN,
WILLIAM J. BRENNAN, WILLIAM O. DOUGLAS, JOHN MARSHALL HARLAN,
JR., THURGOOD MARSHALL, POTTER STEWART, and BYRON "WHIZZER"
WHITE. Lightly toned and creased. Show-through from adhesive residue on verso (does not
touch signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
