6½x3½. FDC honoring Chief Justice John Jay, Washington, D.C., December 12, 1958,
15-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. These Justices all served together on the
Rehnquist court. Kennedy, Stevens, Souter and Thomas are still Justices. REHNQUIST
(1924-2005) was appointed Associate Justice by President Richard M. Nixon on January 7,
1972. President Ronald Reagan appointed Rehnquist as Chief Justice on September 26,
1986; he served until his death in 2005. As Chief Justice, Rehnquist presided at President
Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999. WHITE (1917-2002), appointed Associate Justice by
President John F. Kennedy, served from 1962-1993. BLACKMUN (1908-1999), appointed
by President Richard Nixon in 1970, served as an Associate Justice until retiring in 1994.
KENNEDY, born in 1936, was appointed Associate Justice by President Reagan in 1988.
STEVENS, born in 1920,was appointed Associate Justice by President Gerald Ford in
1975. SOUTER (1939-2025),was appointed Associate Justice by President George Bush
in 1990. THOMAS, born in 1948, was appointed Associate Justice by President Bush in
1991 to fill the seat of retiring Thurgood Marshall (the first Black American on the Supreme
Court). Lightly toned and rippled, otherwise in fine condition.
