Nixon on January 7, 1972. President Ronald Reagan appointed Rehnquist as Chief Justice on September 26, 1986; he served until his death in 2005. As Chief Justice, Rehnquist presided at President Clinton's impeachment trial in 1999. BYRON R. WHITE (1917-2002), appointed Associate Justice by President John F. Kennedy, served from 1962-1993. HARRY BLACKMUN (1908-1999), appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1970, served as an Associate Justice until retiring in 1994. ANTHONY M. KENNEDY, appointed Associate Justice by President Reagan in 1988, continues to serve on the Court. CLARENCE THOMAS, appointed Associate Justice by President George Bush in 1991 to fill the seat of retiring Thurgood Marshall (the first Black American on the Supreme Court), continues to serve on the Court. RUTH BADER GINSBURG and STEPHEN BREYER served on the Rehnquist Court as Associate Justices since their appointments by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and 1994, respectively, and continue to serve on the Court.
