Signature: "Thea Rasche" in pencil, 2½x1½, affixed to 3¼x3. Thea Rasche (1899-1971) was Germany's first female stunt pilot, flying an Udet Flamingo. In 1927 her father, a wealthy brewer, rewarded her with 50,000 marks for jilting her fiancé half an hour before the wedding, and she put the money into her flying career. She toured America in 1927, unable to compete for money because she was on a tourist visa, but earning a reputation for her skill and daring; some called her "Rash Thea." She crashed her plane in the Hudson River while attempting to fly under a bridge at Albany. Rasche was the first German pilot to join the 99's, the honor association of female pilots.
