THEODOR HERZL
Signature on a rare typed letter discussing correspondence with the Grand Action Committee (in German, 1902)
Rare TLS: "Herzl" as Chairman, 1 page, 8¼x11. Vienna, 1902 January 8. On sheet headed "Circular I" to an "Esteemed Colleague". In German, translated. In full: "During the course of the previous year, we repeatedly felt that it was necessary to bring our correspondence with the colleagues of the Grand Action Committee to a certain and expedient form. We want to take the first step by establishing a correspondence book for the members of the A.C., in which the incoming and outgoing letters with their respective dates will be specifically registered. We sincerely recommend that you also start such a book, because it is the easiest way to obtain control over the colleagues' reporting as well as your own activities. Yours faithfully with Zionist greetings, for the Action Committee". Also signed by the Secretary. In 1896, Hungarian-born Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) wrote Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State), which advocated the founding of a Jewish State in Palestine. He organized the Zionist World Congress in Basel, Switzerland in 1897, and Herzl was President of the Zionist Organization from 1897 to his death in 1904. In Europe, Herzl kept in contact with many leaders. In 1901, England offered the Jewish people land in British East Africa. This divided many Zionists who wanted a home in Palestine. Extreme worry over the dispute affected the health of the founder of modern Zionism and hastened his death in 1904 at the age of 44. Theodor Herzl is rare in any form. Lightly creased with folds, vertical folds at Secretary's signature. ¼-inch tear at lower blank edge, nicked at upper left edge. Lightly soiled. Two file holes reinforced with tape at blank left margin. Overall, fine condition.
