THEODOR REIK
Reik handwrote, dated and signed this letter from New York City in
1954, about his manuscript for The Man with the Baton and his work on the
book The Face of God.
Autograph letter signed "Theodor Reik" in blue ink. 2 pages,
6x9, 1 sheet pages front and verso, on Lake Minnewaska Mountain Homes
stationery. New York City, Sept. 10, 1955. In full:
"Dear Clem: I am back in the City and here is the promi=sed manuscript of
The Man with the Baton. I estimate that it would be 20-22 printed pages.
If that is too much for one issue please divide it. I enclose, of all e=vents,
the preface, now reduced to a single page. in case you want to di=vide the
article and want to publish it as first sec=tion of the new book The Return
of the Re=pressed. I am wor=king on the second cha= pter The Face Of
God (the [illegible] story) and that will be finished in 10 days, if you
would prefer that and if you can wait. Please let me hear from you. My telephone
is MO 3/5495 - Best time to reach me is early in the morning and in the
evenings. I - [illeiglble] much of my time in the library. I hope you and your
family had nice vaca=tions and that everything is going your way. Cordially".
American psychologist REIK (1888-1969, born in Vienna, Austria) was
one of Sigmund Freud's earliest and most brilliant students (their
association lasted from 1910-1938, when Reik came to the U.S.). In 1948, Dr.
Reik, who is noted for his research in such areas as masochism and criminology,
founded the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. His works
include The Secret Self (1952), Of Love and Lust (1957), Voices
from the Inaudible (1964), Curiosities of the Self (1965) and The
Many Faces of Sex (1956). Lightly toned, stained and creased. Handwriting,
but not signature, is lightly smeared in places, but legible. Show-through on
both sides of letter, which touch signature and handwriting. Light tear in lower
right corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
