Reik handwrote, dated and signed this letter on his letterhead in 1964, thanking the recipient for her letter and invitation to the Hydra Club and making some snarky comments on her spelling.
Autograph letter signed: "Theodor Reik", 1p, 8½x11, on Reik's personalized letterhead. 1964 November 12. In full: "Dear Mrs. Crawford: I am really tou=ched by your kind letter. (By the way, a new book Curiosities of the Self, Three Explorations will be published by Farr, Strauss in the Spring 1965). Your remarks give me (as always) food for thought and are (as always) interesting. (À propos the word you charmingly mis=spelled in ambivalent) Many thanks for the in=vitation to the Hydra Club. I accept it with pleasure, if you tell me when that means at what future time the club meets. U=sually I am free on Fridays after 6 o'clock, also some Sa=turdays. Again many thanks and all good wishes Cordially yours," American psychologist Theodore Reik (1888-1969) was one of Sigmund Freud's earliest and most brilliant students (their association lasted from 1910-1938, when Reik came to the U.S.). In 1948, Dr. Reik, who is noted for his research in such areas as masochism and criminology, founded the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. His works include The Secret Self (1952), Of Love and Lust (1957), Voices from the Inaudible (1964), Curiosities of the Self (1965) and The Many Faces of Sex (1956). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Handwriting, but not signature, is lightly smeared and spotted in places, but legible. Folded once vertically and thrice horizontally. Otherwise, fine condition.
