THEODORE ENSLIN
Self-caricature of the bearded poet, smoking a pipe
Self-Caricature signed: "Theodore/Enslin", 6x9. Image with
beard and spectacles, smoking a pipe, signed with the same pen. Initially a
music student, Theodore Enslin (1925-2011) was recognized as a writing
talent by his famous teacher, Nadia Boulanger. Thereafter, Enslin considered
himself a composer who used words instead of notes. His first poems, The
Work Proposed, were published in 1958. His "Ranger" (1958) is considered one
of the most important long poems of the 20th century. From 1960, Enslin
lived in rural Maine, performing odd jobs and making canes, in a
deliberate effort to distance himself from literary and academic fashion.
His last book of poems, Nine, was published in 2004. Normal mailing
folds. Light surface creases. Slightly toned. Fine condition.
