THEODORE CUYLER
The popular Presbyterian minister signs his name for an admirer in black ink
Printed card signed in ink: "Theo. L. Cuyler/ Pastor at Lafayette/ Ave. Church/ April 6, 69 Brooklyn" in black ink. 5x2¾ printed autograph card. New York City, New York. April 6, 1869. Theodore L. Cuyler (1822-1909) was a famed late nineteenth-century/ early twentieth-century Presbyterian minister and religious writer in the United States. After studying at Princeton and graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1846. He worked as a pastor in the New York area for years until he opened his own church, the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, which became the largest Presbyterian Church in the U.S. under his leadership. Cuyler's is best remembered for his support of the temperance movement (prohibition of alchohol), and as an opponent of women's suffrage in the U.S. deriding women who "snatch after the ballot, the juryman's seat, and the police baton of civil authority", asserting that women would no longer be pure when they finished the job of "purifying the primaries, the caucus, and the conventions." Toned. Corners rounded. Small stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
