THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG BROADWAY CAST: ROBERT KLEIN and LUCIE ARNAZ
Three members of the cast They're Playing Our Song sign a program page from the production.
Program Page signed: "Robert/Klein", "Lucie Arnaz" and "Allen Kelman", 1p, 5½x9. Signed on page picturing the two stars from the program for Neil Simon's 1979 Broadway musical, They're Playing Our Song, which debuted in New York City at the Imperial Theatre. The play, the story of two songwriters (Vernon Gersch, played by ROBERT KLEIN, and Sonia Wolsk, played by LUCIE ARNAZ) who fall in love, was based on the real life love story of Marvin Hamlisch, who wrote the music, and Carole Bayer Sager, who wrote the lyrics to the musical. During its run, Klein, who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor, began hosting The Robert Klein Radio Show (which would run for two years) and left the production. Klein was replaced by Laurence Luckinbill, who, in a case of life imitating art, met and fell in love with Arnaz, whom he later married. Klein, a multi-talented stage and screen actor, is perhaps best known as a stand-up comic. First gaining attention as the host of Comedy Tonight (1970), he has also hosted Dead Comics Society and Stand Up Stand Up on the Comedy Central cable service and has performed in venues as diverse as nightclub stages and the White House. Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, began her career at the age of 12 on The Lucy Show and became a regular on Here's Lucy at age 17 in 1968. Although she has appeared in a number of feature films, including The Jazz Singer (1980), for which she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe, television movies and game shows, talk shows and variety shows, Lucie's passion is live theater. They're Playing Our Song was her most successful play, but she has also appeared on stage in a number of other productions, including Annie Get Your Gun, Educating Rita (with husband Luckinbill), the Tony Award-winning Lost in Yonkers and The Witches of Eastwick. She has also won an Emmy Award for producing the television biopic, Lucy & Desi: A Home Movie. ALLEN KELMAN is a producer of film and live musical shows, featuring artists as diverse as Johnny Mathis and Sammy Hagar, Tony Bennett and Ozzie Osbourne. He had no listed connection with They're Playing Our Song. Lightly creased, diagonal crease touches the upper loops of the "L" and "A" and the "z" in Arnaz' signature and her facial image. Irregular right edge from removal from bound program. Overall, fine condition.
