VAN JOHNSON (1916-2008) emerged as a film star during World War II, later making a good transition from leading man to character roles. His prominent films include the film featured here, The Caine Mutiny (1954), Divorce, American Style (1967) and The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985). Johnson could also sing, permitting him to star in the film PHYLLIS THAXTER (1919-2012) has appeared in almost 70 movies and TV shows. Thaxter got her start on stage, joining the Montreal Repertory in her teens and debuting on Broadway in 1940's There Shall Be No Night. Thirty Seconds over Tokyo was her silver screen premiere. She was often cast as a faithful wife but culd play other roles, like the schizophrenic heroine of Bewitched (1944). Thaxter's career slowed in 1952 with an attack of infantile paralysis, after which she focused more on television. Thaxter played Ma Kent in Superman: The Movie (1978). Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, which dramatized the bombing of Japan by Doolittle's raiders in 1942, was based on a book of the same name by Ted Lawson, who piloted one of the B-25s. Johnson portrayed Lt. Lawson in the film, with Thaxter playing his wife. Fine condition.
