TOM DASCHLE
Letter to fellow Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, thanking him for assisting the campaign committee, acquired directly from Moynihan's estate
Autograph Letter signed: "Tom" as U.S. Senate Democratic Leader, 1p, 7x5. On personal card. No place, 1996 September 18. To "Dear Pat" [Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan]. In full: "Your generous help for the DSCC is greatly appreciated. I'm especially grateful that you personally took the initiative to call the Committee yourself. If we are successful this fall, it will be due in part to the remarkable help of so many in our caucus." DASCHLE represented South Dakota in the U.S. House (1979-1987) and Senate (1987-2005). He was been Senate Minority Leader (1995-2001, 2003-2005), and Majority Leader (2001-2003), the youngest Senator other than Lyndon Johnson ever elected to that post. From 1989 to 1999, Daschle co-chaired the policy committee of the Democratic conference. Daschle lost his bid for re-election (by a very narrow margin) in 2004. An early supporter of Barack Obama's Presidential campaign, he was slated to become Secretary of Health and Human Services until tax-related issues de-railed his nomination. He remains active as an author and in leading advocacy groups. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN (1927-2003). Moynihan served four terms in the U.S. Senate (1977-2001) as a Democrat representing New York. A prolific author, Moynihan held positions in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Estate inventory numbers in upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
