THOMAS ALVA EDISON
Handwritten note from "Blume", probably one of Thomas Edison's "muckers", addressed to Edison and regarding the two sets of samples in a test
Manuscript note unsigned, written in pencil. 1p, 4¾x8, ruled paper. In full: "Mr Edison, The two lots in this test are identical except the one set has waxed edges and the other is not waxed. The blacks used in up the [illegible] are from the same lot number and they are similar in all other respects. I will test them once a month. Blume". "Blume" was probably one of Edison's "muckers", who did the mule's work of developing Edison's inventions. Edison (1847-1931) patented more than a thousand inventions, including the incandescent electric lamp, phonograph (his favorite invention), mimeograph, alkaline storage battery and microphone. In 1890, he invented the Vitascope, and Edison is credited with establishing the standard of using 35mm film with four perforations on the edges. He produced talking motion pictures in 1913. In 1887, Edison had set up his facility dedicated to research and development in West Orange, New Jersey. By the following year, it was the world's largest scientific testing laboratory. His original laboratory, in Menlo Park, New Jersey, was removed to the Greenfield Village Museum in Dearborn, Michigan by his friend, Henry Ford, in 1929. Lightly toned and creased. Light tears at right edge, which touch handwriting but not signature, and at top and left edges. Folded thrice and unfolded. Light tears along left edge at top fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
