THOMAS ADDISON RICHARDS
Artist Thomas Addison Richards wrote this letter on National Academy
of Design stationery to in 1888 to say that he is "sorry not to find your
name on the list".
Autograph letter signed "T. Addison Richards". 1 page, 5¼x8¾,
graph paper, on National Academy of Design stationery. Nov. 19, 1888.
In full: "My dear Mrs. Stoughton I have posted a catalogue to your
address and am sorry not to find your name on the list. I have tried but without
success so far to discover your pre-[illegible] among the six hundred or
more left out. I should to do so before they are returned Sincerely yours."
EDWIN WALLACE STOUGHTON (1812-1882) was a New York City patent
attorney, most notably for Charles Goodyear. American artist and author
THOMAS ADDISON RICHARDS (1820-1900) was born in New York, but his
family moved to Georgia in 1837. He rambled around Georgia and the rest of
the South between 1838 and 1844, sketchbook and notebook in hand, and wrote
illustrated travelogues of his journeys before settling in New York City to
become a teacher. Richards' paintings and drawings are in the collections of
the Brooklyn Museum, the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia and Harvard
University. He also wrote many articles and books during the 1850s,
including an 1852 collection of short stories titled Tallulah and
Jocasse, and was the editor of Appleton's Illustrated Hand-book of
American Travel (1857), the first major travel guide for the United
States and Canada. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded once vertically
and twice horizontally. Otherwise in fine condition.
