EDWIN WALLACE STOUGHTON (1812-1882) was a New York City patent attorney, most notably for Charles Goodyear. American artist and author THOMAS ADDISON RICHARDS (1820-1900) was born in New York, but his family moved to Georgia in 1837. Richards' paintings and drawings are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia and Harvard University. He also wrote many articles and books during the 1850s, including an 1852 collection of short stories titled Tallulah and Jocasse, and was the editor of Appleton's Illustrated Hand-book of American Travel (1857), the first major travel guide for the United States and Canada.
