THOMAS ANSTEY GUTHRIE
The successful British humorist sends letter setting up an appointment to meet acquaintance, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Anstey Guthrie" in black ink. 1 page, 4x6¼. Kensington, London, England. November 3, 1887. Addressed to a Mr. Leon. In full: "I am so sorry - but Wednesday is always an impossible evening for me now - as I have a business engagement on that night in early week. I shall hope to have the pleasure of calling shortly & I should have done so earlier but I have been away from town for the entire summer & autumn. With kindest regards, Very truly yours". Thomas Anstey Guthrie (1856-1934) was an English novelist and journalist who wrote multiple comic novels under the pseudonym "F. Anstey". Although he studied law at Cambridge and was called to the bar in 1880, the popular success of his story Vice Versa (1882) made him an established literary figure of original humor. Guthrie would go on to publish many popular novels such as The Giant's Robe (1883), The Black Poodle (1884), The Tinted Venus (1885), A Fallen Idol (1886), and A Bayard from Bengal (1902). He became an important member of the famed comic magazine Punch, and his farce "The Man from Blankleys", first publish in Punch, was produced at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1901. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Toned stains throughout. Creased throughout. Corners rounded. Left edge frayed. Soiled on verso. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
