Autograph Letter signed: "T. B Reed", 1 page, 5¾x8 ruled sheet. On letterhead of Hotel Manhattan. No place, 1899 April 19. To Justin McCarthy. Written one month after his retirement from Congress. In full: "I have your letter and hasten to assure you that I did not suspect you of any personation of another. If I was impatient - and I ought not to have been - you will perhaps understand and excuse it. Very truly." Reed, a Republican, represented Maine in the House from 1877-1899, serving as Speaker of the House from 1889-1891 and 1895-1899. He was responsible for the adoption by the House of "Reed's Rules" (1890), which increased the Speaker's powers to expedite legislation favored by the majority party. Slightly creased and soiled. ¼-inch missing at upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
