THOMAS B. REED
As House Speaker, he signs a typed letter declining an invitation.
Typed Letter signed: ""TB Reed" as Speaker, 1 page, 7½x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1898 February 21. On official letterhead to Lucian L. Bonheur, New York, N.Y. In full: "Your letter of Jan. 25th was mislaid or I should sooner have acknowledged the kindness of your invitation which I regret that circumstances do not permit me to accept. Sincerely yours". Thomas Brackett Reed, a Republican, represented Maine in the House from 1877-1899, serving as Speaker of the House from 1889-1891 and 1895-1899. Serving concurrently as Chairman of the Rules Committee, he secured adoption by the House of "Reed's Rules" (1890), which increased the Speaker's powers to expedite legislation favored by the majority party. When told of a lengthy debate in the Senate, Reed quipped, "Thank God the House of Representatives is not a deliberative body." Mounting adhesive remnant on verso shows through lightly in upper corners. Light horizontal and vertical folds touch signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
