THOMAS B. REED
The former House Speaker signs a typed letter on his New York law firm's stationery.
Typed Letter signed: "T. B. Reed", 1 page, 5½x8. New York, N.Y., 1900 March 28. On letterhead of his law firm to Julian Hawthorne, Colonial Press, New York. In full: "I have your letters of March 26th and 27th, and very much regret to say that it will not be possible for me to comply with your request, owing to other engagements. Yours very truly." Thomas Brackett Reed, a Republican, represented Maine in the House from 1877-1899, serving as Speaker of the House from 1889-1891 and 1895-1899. Serving concurrently as Chairman of the Rules Committee, he secured adoption by the House of "Reed's Rules" (1890), which increased the Speaker's powers to expedite legislation favored by the majority party. When told of a lengthy debate in the Senate, Reed quipped, "Thank God the House of Representatives is not a deliberative body." The addressee, Julian Hawthorne, himself a successful writer, was the son of famed novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. Slightly soiled. Frayed along left edge and at lower corners. Unevenly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
