THOMAS BUCHANAN REED
Signature of the author of Sheridan's Ride, mounted on a blue
card
Signature signed "T Buchanan Reed". 4¼x2, mounted on 4¾x2¾ blue card.
This blue card is in turn mounted to a 5 ¼ x 4 card which incorrectly identifies
the signature as "F. Buchanan Reed", captioned: "Author of Famous
Civil War Poem 'Sheridan's Ride'". Reed (1822-1872, born in Chester
County, Pennsylvania) was an American painter and poet. Reed began his artistic
career at seventeen, when he studied sculpting in Cincinnati, but only long
enough to convince himself that he wasn't cut out as a sculptor. He bounced
along the East Coast during the 1840s and visited Europe during the early 1850s,
learning his craft as a painter. He moved to Florence, Italy in 1853 and
developed a fondness for poetry there. His first volume of poetry, The New
Pastoral, came out in 1847. But Reed had to wait for the American Civil War
before writing his most famous poem, Sheridan's Ride (1864), on Union
General Phillip H. Sheridan's ride to support his troops after a surprise attack
by Confederate General Jubal A. Early at the Battle of Cedar Creek. Lightly
toned and creased. Signature is lightly rippled. Otherwise in fine
condition.
