THOMAS C. PLATT
Signature of the US Senator and New York political boss
Signature: "T. C. Platt/New York", 4x2½ card. Republican
Thomas Collier Platt (1833-1910), a former businessman, represented New
York in the U.S. House of Representatives (1873-1877) and the U.S.
Senate from March 4, 1881-May 16, 1881, when he resigned because of a
disagreement with President Garfield over federal appointments in New York.
(Platt, a member of the "Stalwart" faction of the Republican Party,
opposed the civil service reforms advocated by Garfield.) He was the
unsuccessful candidate for election to the U.S. Senate to succeed himself (his
chances ruined when Charles Guiteau assassinated Garfield for promoting civil
service) but later returned to the Senate, serving from 1897-1909.
Platt, whose political machine dominated Republican politics in New York at
the turn of the century, pushed aggressively for Theodore Roosevelt's
selection as a Vice Presidential nominee to remove him as a rival in the State.
This maneuver backfired when Roosevelt became President and backed reform
Republicans there. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at top left and on verso (no show
through). Otherwise, fine condition.
