THOMAS CARDINAL TIEN
Typed Letter signed as Apostolic Administrator of Taiwan in 1963.
Typed Letter signed: "+ Card. Tien" as Apostolic Administrator, 1 page, 8½x11. Taipei, Taiwan, 1963 January 18. On his official letterhead to Ashley T. Cole, New York, N.Y. In full: "You will be surprised to receive this letter now but in the last two years we had three removals and your letter March 23rd, 1960 somehow got misplaced. We have found it back just now. It is with pleasure that I send you this signed picture [item not included] and I hope you will overlook the long delay you experienced in receiving it. I take this occasion to give you my best wishes for the New Year. May God bless you and grant you peace and happiness throughout this year. With all good wishes I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ". Thomas Cardinal Tien (Tien Ken-hsin, 1890-1967) became the first Chinese cardinal and the first Archbishop of Beijing, both in 1946. Leaving China after the communist takeover in 1949, he resided for more than a decade in a seminary in the US. Pope Pius XII, reportedly irked that Cardinal Tien had left his post, gave him no new assignments. However, Pope John XXIII, worried that the People's Republic was establishing its own Catholic hierarchy in China, made him Apostolic Administrator for Taiwan. Tien said he avoided returning to the mainland because this would have increased persecution of Catholics. He was buried in Taipei. Normal mailing folds. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso - show-through at upper and lower margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
