THOMAS D. RICE
Clipped signature of the actor who performed in blackface as "Jim Crow"
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yr Obdt Svt/Tho. D. Rice/1839", 4½x2 affixed to slightly larger sheet. Clipped from a letter. Ink note (unknown hand): 1860. (This is the date of Rice's death, not the signing date.) Thomas D. Rice (1808-1860) was a traveling actor from 1827, performing both in his native New York and on the Western frontier. In 1830, he developed one of the first blackface acts, appearing dressed in rags as a field hand slave, albeit a nimble and witty one. He called his character Jim Crow, and was the first to use the moniker later associated with segregation laws. His was not a minstrel show. Instead, Rice wrote plays for this character, titles including "Oh, Hush" and "Virginian Mummy". The peak of his popularity was 1832-1844, and he toured London to large audiences in 1836. He also starred as the title character in a less abolitionist version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Suffering from a progressive form of paralysis, Rice retired from the stage in the late 1840s. The once wealthy man spent his later years in saloons, and died a pauper. Soiled. Irregularly cut. Paper remnants on edges of signature. Corners slightly worn. Paper remnants on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
