THOMAS DIBDIN
A year before his death, the English writer extends an
invitation.
Autograph Letter signed: "T. Dibdin", 1 page, 7½x4¼. No place,
1840 November 12. To "Dear Sir", in full: "Pray have the
kindness to permit two friends to lend matter this Evening to my name. I will
take the Liberty of calling again for the favour of your Answer and am, Dear
Sir, most respectfully, your obedient servant". Thomas Dibdin (1771-1841)
was an English clergyman and bibliographer, who published his first
work, Introduction to the Knowledge of the Editions of the Classics, in
1802. Although some critics charged that Dibdin's depth of knowledge was
insufficient to his chosen task, some of his books, including
Bibliomania (1809) and The Library Companion (1824), proved
very popular. Other books recounted his travels as a book buyer. He was
co-founder and Vice President of the first book club, the Roxburghe Club
(1812). Two horizontal and one vertical fold. Lightly creased. Toned.
Otherwise, fine condition.
