Check signed: "Tom Hayden", 6x2¾. Los Angeles, California, 1991 April 25. Check #383, drawn on Hayden's account, c/o Taylor & Lieberman, A.A.C., at City National Bank, payable to Mrs. Winston's for $130.18. Activist and politician Tom Hayden (b. 1939) was President of Students for a Democratic Society (1962-1963), drafting its most significant document, the Port Huron Statement. Active in the civil rights and anti-war movements, he was one of the Chicago Seven placed on trial for disrupting the Democratic National Convention of 1968. (He was found guilty on some charges, but an appeals court threw out the convictions on the grounds of judicial misconduct.) In 1972 he accompanied Jane Fonda (who would soon become his wife, 1973-1990) on their still controversial visit to North Vietnam. Hayden and Fonda founded the Committee for Economic Democracy, a liberal group which proved quite effective in getting candidates elected to local offices in California. Hayden himself was a California state legislator for nearly 2 decades (1982-2000), successfully introducing the Hayden Act promoting animal rights. Hayden remains active in liberal causes, including environmental protection and opposition to corporate globalism. Mrs. Winston's is a popular Los Angeles green grocer, salad and sandwich shop. Fine condition.
