verso). Ink note (unknown hand): "(President Weirton Steel/Pa.). Dated (unknown
hand): Oct. 6 (n.y.) Autograph Notes on verso: "Thanks for everything - Bill
Howard", "There really is no substitute for brains/[illegible signature],
"George/Darling, in plain old English I think/you are terrific/May
Howard". Thomas E. Millsop (1898-1967), a US Marine Corps pilot in
World War I, joined Weirton Steel, a subsidiary of National Steel, as a
salesman in 1927. Nine years later he became company president, and headed
Weirton during its World War II heyday as a supplier of war material. He became
the first Mayor of Weirton, West Virgina (1947-1955), President of National
Steel (1954-1961) and its Chairman until his retirement in 1964. (Weirton,
located is located in West Virginia, not Pennsylvania as the ink note states,
but it is very close to the borders of both Pennsylvania and Ohio.) Thomas
Millsop married Eleanor Marwitz Ent, widow of US Air Force General Suzal Ent, in
1949. Mrs. Millsop was a former stage and radio singer in the Pittsburgh
area. These signatures were acquired by radio/TV host George Sanders. No
information is available on the signers included on verso. Right edge ragged
from previous binding. Edges lightly toned. Some show-through of ink from side
to side.
