THOMAS BRASSEY, EARL OF BRASSEY I
The Earl who circumnavigated the globe pens his name on this irregularly cut slip of paper
Signature: “Sir T. Brassey K.C.B. M.P./ 24 Park Lane” 5¼x3¼ at widest points attached to a 6¼x4½ sheet of paper. Clipping, 1x1¼, of the seal of the Secretary of State, Home Department seal affixed to slip of paper containing signature. Biographical clipping, 2¼x3¼, affixed to the left of signature. Thomas Brassey, Earl of Brassey I (1836-1918) was a Liberal Party politician who founded The Naval Annual. From 1895 to 1900, Brassey served as the governor of the Australian colony of Victoria. He competed in yacht club events, at one time functioning as a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Notably, from 1876 to 1877, Brassey circumnavigated the globe in his schooner, Sunbeam. Vertical crease running down center of slip of paper containing signature touches parts of the signature, but not the Earl's name. Slip of paper toned and irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
