THOMAS EGAN
Vintage photograph of the world famous Irish operatic tenor, shown in knightly costume (4½x7). Extremely rare!
Inscribed printed photograph signed in ink: "To/W.E. Colville/with/Kind regards/Thomas Egan", in black ink. Sepia, 4½x7 overall, 3¾x5¾ image. Photographer's caption for the Dover Street Studios, London, in lower margin. One of only two singers like him in his era, Irish tenor Thomas Egan was a rarity among Italian opera singers; however, it was his uniqueness which made him an international star. A student of Enrico Caruso's teacher Cav. Sarmiento and Galliano Masini, Egan was known all over Italy as the singing "L'Irlandese" (the Irishman). His international touring brought him the most fame, having performed in Europe, Canada, and The United States. In America he starred in 6 Broadway plays, including The Brothers Karamzov (1927), Minick (1924-1924) and Samson and Delilah (1920-1921). He also performed solo comedic and tragic concerts, singing songs such as, "Has sorrow They Young Days Shaded," "Songs of Araby" and "All Those Endearing Young Charms." Toned. Lightly bowed. Corners creased. Light surface impressions (not seen head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
