Cooke (1703-1756) was celebrated for his translations from Latin and
Classical Greek. These included Cicero's On the Nature of Gods and the

even called him" Hesiod" Cooke.) He also wrote his own poetry, as well as
modern British histories, one of which was a Life of King Edward III.
Cooke was often embroiled in literary and political controversies. Alexander
Pope includes Cooke as one of his "dunces" in his satire, The
Dunciad. An active Whig politically, Cooke was sued for libel for
criticisms of Tory officials, ending his life in poverty. (His daughter
Elizabeth died in the workhouse two years later.) Norma mailing fold. Corners
