THOMAS HILL - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED - HFSID 304779
Price: $220.00
THOMAS HILL
Uncharacteristically apologetic letter, admitting he assigned the
wrong role to actor Charles Kemble.
Autograph Letter signed: "Thos. Hill", 1 page, 5x5¼, affixed
to a 5¼x6 sheet (2 surfaces). No place, no date."My dear Black",
in full: "My cursed stupidity notwithstanding, I was present,
substituted Faulkland for Captain Absolute. That was the character Charles
Kemble should have acted, and which was performed by Serle. Truly yours".
Englishman Thomas Hill was proprietor of Theatre Royal, Covent Garden
(London) from 1774 to 1803, and co-proprietor (with John Phillip Kemble) through
1809. Hill had a reputation as an autocrat, provoking an
(unsuccessful) actors rebellion in 1799 after he imposed strict new rules,
including heavy fines on any actor who refused a role. (In the above case,
Charles Kemble was bound to accept Hill's casting decision for Sheridan's play,
The Rivals.) Hill commissioned portraits of his actors,
maintaining an extensive collection. Hill remained active in theatre matters
long after his retirement. Two horizontal folds. Worn. Lightly creased.
Irregularly cut at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
