THOMAS HOOD. Signature: "Tom Hood", 3½x1 slip affixed to
5x3 card. Scottish poet Thomas Hood (1799-1845) wrote much humorous
poetry, collected in volumes such as Poems of Wit and Humor. However,
he also wrote poems protesting conditions of labor. His "The Song of
the Shirt" (1843), praised by Charles Dickens, was widely reprinted on
broadsheets and handkerchiefs. It included the line, "It is not linen you're
wearing out, But human creatures' lives." Signature slip lightly soiled.
Mounting card lightly soiled, with pen and pencil captions at top. Otherwise,
fine condition.
